Which frequencies can dogs hear?

Dogs hear far higher frequencies than humans. While our hearing ends at roughly 16 to 20 kHz depending on age, dogs perceive tones up to around 45 kHz – the classic working range of a dog whistle therefore often lies above the human hearing limit, and playing a dog whistle sound online is a convenient way to explore it. The figures below are reference values from the specialist literature and vary by breed, age and individual:

How to play the dog whistle sound online

The mosquito tone: 17.4 kHz as an age limit

The so-called mosquito tone sits at 17.4 kHz and is a special case: teenagers and young adults usually hear it clearly, while for many people from about 25 to 30 years of age it is no longer perceptible. The reason is the age-related decline of the upper hearing limit, which starts at the highest frequencies.

Using a dog whistle correctly in training

A dog whistle is not a miracle cure but a signal device – its effect comes from conditioning. Build the signal up like this:

  • First link the tone to something positive: play the tone, then reward immediately afterwards.
  • Use short, consistent signals – for example two short tones for the recall – and never change their meaning later.
  • Train in a low-distraction environment first and increase distractions step by step.
  • Keep the chosen frequency constant so your dog reliably recognises the signal.

The advantage of high frequencies: they stand out clearly from everyday noise and voices while remaining unobtrusive for people nearby.

Responsible use: animal welfare comes first

As useful as high tones are in training – always use them responsibly. Canine hearing is more sensitive than ours, and what sounds quiet to you can be unpleasantly loud for the animal.

  • Never play tones continuously or at high volume in the immediate vicinity of an animal.
  • Keep sufficient distance and always start at low volume.
  • Do not target animals that are not yours – neither for testing nor for fun.
  • Stop immediately if your dog shows signs of stress, such as flattened ears, whining or withdrawal.

Which frequency should I set for the dog whistle?

For first attempts, the range between 7 and 15 kHz works well: dogs perceive it very clearly, and you can still monitor the tone yourself. Classic dog whistles often operate above that. More important than the exact value is consistency – choose a frequency your dog visibly reacts to and keep it unchanged throughout training.

Will my dog hear the tone through my phone speaker?

Usually yes: most smartphone speakers reproduce tones up to about 15 to 20 kHz, albeit at a decreasing level. Above roughly 20 kHz, common hardware reaches its limit regardless of the setting. Watch how your dog responds – ear movement or head turning show that the tone is getting through. External speakers often deliver more output than a phone.

Is the tone unpleasant for dogs?

That depends on volume, duration and distance. A short, moderate signal tone is not painful for dogs – it is simply easy for them to hear. It becomes unpleasant at high volume, with prolonged exposure or at very close range, because canine hearing is more sensitive than ours. Use short signals, start quietly and watch your animal – stop immediately at any sign of stress.

Why can I not hear anything myself?

The chosen frequency is probably above your personal hearing limit. The upper limit drops with age: children often hear up to 18 or 19 kHz, while many adults only reach about 12 to 16 kHz.
