How to Find Your Tinnitus Frequency – Step by Step

The matching approach behind this tinnitus frequency finder rests on a simple principle: you play a sine tone and step by step bring it closer to the pitch of the sound in your ear.

  1. Start quietly: Set the volume to a minimum and raise it only until the tone is just barely audible – never loud, or your hearing could suffer additional damage.
  2. Pick a starting point: Use the preset chips at 3, 4, 6 and 8 kHz; the most common tinnitus frequencies lie in this range. The 4 kHz sine tone is already loaded as a preset.
  3. Narrow it down roughly: Does your tinnitus sound higher or lower than the comparison tone? Switch chips accordingly.
  4. Fine-tune: Enter the frequency precisely and adjust it in steps of 0.1 until the tone and your ear sound match as closely as possible.

Common Tinnitus Frequencies: 3 to 8 kHz

For many people affected, the ear sound sits somewhere between 3 and 8 kHz – a rough guide, not a fixed rule. Strikingly often, tinnitus is found near 4 kHz: this is where noise-induced hearing loss typically shows the so-called 4 kHz notch, a dip in hearing caused by noise exposure. The phantom sound frequently appears where hearing is already damaged.

  • 3 to 4 kHz: typical of noise-induced hearing damage

Masking Tinnitus: Noise as an Everyday Aid

Masking means partially covering the tinnitus with an external sound. Many people find steady noise more pleasant than complete silence, in which the ear sound pushes itself into the foreground.   • sudden or one-sided tinnitus – sudden hearing loss needs medical attention on the same day,
  • accompanying symptoms such as reduced hearing, dizziness, ear pain or a feeling of pressure in the ear,
  • a pulsatile sound that throbs in time with your heartbeat.

Reliable contacts include ENT practices, ENT clinics and patient organisations such as the American Tinnitus Association or Tinnitus UK. An informal hearing test can give you a first impression of your hearing – but it does not replace professional audiometry.
