How to Test Your Hearing Limit

Before starting the online hearing test, set your device volume to a moderate level โ€” the test tones should be clearly audible, but never uncomfortably loud. Put on headphones, because built-in laptop or phone speakers often fail to reproduce very high frequencies at all.

  1. Start with the preset sine tone at 8 kHz โ€” most people hear this tone without any trouble.
  2. Then click through the frequency quick-select from 8 up to 18 kHz in ascending order.
  3. Note the last frequency you can still perceive clearly: that is your approximate upper hearing limit.

Important: do not turn up the volume between steps. That would distort the result, and when switching back to lower frequencies you risk unpleasantly loud levels.

Hearing Range by Age: Typical Guideline Values

The upper hearing limit declines over the course of life in practically everyone. The following values are rough guidelines โ€” individual deviations in either direction are completely normal and no cause for concern on their own.

If your result is somewhat below the guideline for your age group, your equipment may also be the reason: headphones, sound card and background noise all have a noticeable effect on the outcome.

Why Does the Hearing Limit Decrease with Age?

The main reason is presbycusis, natural age-related hearing loss. In the inner ear, delicate hair cells convert sound waves into nerve signals. The cells that process high frequencies sit at the entrance of the cochlea and take the heaviest strain throughout life โ€” which is why they wear out first. Once destroyed, human hair cells do not grow back.

In addition, noise exposure accelerates this process considerably: loud concerts, machine noise at work or music played too loud through headphones over long periods. Certain medications and illnesses can also impair high-frequency hearing. That is why some 30-year-olds only reach values more typical of much older people โ€” while well-protected ears can still hear unusually high frequencies at 50.

Not a Medical Hearing Test: When to See an ENT Doctor?

Our frequency test is a playful way to find out how high your hearing reaches โ€” but it is not a medical hearing test. A real audiogram performed by an ENT doctor or audiologist measures your hearing threshold at various frequencies and volumes with calibrated equipment and can reliably diagnose hearing loss. A browser tool with unknown headphones simply cannot do that.

See a doctor promptly in the following cases:

  • Sudden hearing loss โ€” this should be examined quickly.
  • One-sided problems, for example when one ear hears noticeably worse than the other.
  • Ringing or hissing in the ears โ€” beforehand you can use our tool to find your tinnitus frequency and bring your doctor a helpful reference point.

Tips for Meaningful Results

A few simple steps make your result far more meaningful:

  • Use good headphones: over-ear or in-ear headphones reproduce high frequencies much more reliably than laptop or phone speakers.
  • Choose a quiet environment: fan noise, street noise or conversations mask faint high tones and make your hearing limit appear lower than it really is.
  • Test each ear separately: use the panning control to move the tone fully to the left or fully to the right. If one ear hears noticeably worse, that is a good reason to see a doctor.
  • Repeat several times: test on different days and at different times โ€” after a loud concert or working day, many people temporarily hear worse.

Up to how many kHz can a human hear?

The commonly cited range of human hearing extends from about 20 Hz to 20 kHz. However, only children and very young adults reach this full range. With increasing age, the upper limit drops steadily: many adults hear nothing above 15 to 16 kHz, and from around age 60 the limit is often only 10 to 12 kHz.

Why can I no longer hear 15,000 Hz?

In most cases this is not a defect but natural age-related hearing loss (presbycusis): the hair cells in the inner ear that process high frequencies wear down over the years. From around age 40, a hearing limit of about 15 kHz is a perfectly normal guideline value. Also check whether your headphones or speakers can even reproduce such frequencies cleanly โ€” sometimes the tone fails for that reason alone.

Is an online hearing test reliable?

As a rough guide, yes โ€” as a diagnosis, no. The result depends heavily on headphones, sound card, volume and background noise, none of which is calibrated. The test does, however, show you very clearly the highest frequency you can hear under your conditions. What is the mosquito tone?

The mosquito tone refers to very high frequencies around 17 kHz that mostly only teenagers and young adults can perceive. Such tones have been used, among other things, to keep young people away from certain places, and they circulate as ringtones that many adults can no longer hear.
