How to Remove Water from Your Speaker

The generator above is already set up for you: 165 Hz, sine wave, full volume. Follow these steps:

  1. Dry the outside of the phone and remove any case.
  2. Turn your media volume all the way up.
  3. Hold the device with the speaker opening facing down.
  4. Play the tone for about 10 seconds, then pause briefly.
  5. Repeat the process at least three times and wipe away any droplets that come out.

If the speaker still sounds muffled afterwards, wait a few minutes and start again – stubborn droplets often come loose only on the second or third run.

Why 165 Hz of All Frequencies?

A speaker produces sound by vibrating its membrane – at 165 Hz, that means 165 times per second. This relatively low frequency creates a large, powerful excursion of the membrane: the air in the speaker opening is literally pumped back and forth. Water droplets sitting on the membrane or in the sound channel are pushed outwards bit by bit. Very high frequencies move the membrane too weakly, while very low ones can hardly be reproduced by small phone speakers at all. The range around 165 Hz is therefore considered a good compromise – use the quick presets to try 160 Hz and 170 Hz as well, because every speaker responds slightly differently.

iPhone: Water Eject via Shortcut or Right in Your Browser

The Apple Watch has a built-in Water Lock: after a swim it plays a low tone that visibly ejects the water from the speaker. The iPhone lacks this feature out of the box – but there are two ways to recreate it. First: using the Shortcuts app, you can download a so-called water eject shortcut from the internet that plays a similar tone. Such shortcuts come from third parties, however, and need to be set up first. Second, and much simpler: open this page in Safari and start the 165 Hz tone directly in your browser. The principle is identical, it works instantly and requires neither installation nor special permissions.

Android and Other Devices

Android devices have no pre-installed water eject feature, and many apps on the Play Store merely wrap a simple tone in a lot of advertising. You do not need that: this tool runs in any modern browser – Chrome, Firefox or Samsung Internet – and uses the web audio interface of your device. That means the method also works on tablets, laptops and Bluetooth speakers that have gotten wet. The only requirement is that the tone plays through the affected speaker, so disconnect headphones and Bluetooth connections if necessary. When Should You See a Professional?

The 165 Hz tone helps against water in the speaker opening – it does not help against water inside the device. Visit a repair shop if you notice any of these signs:

  • The sound remains muffled or fails completely even after several runs.
  • The display shows spots, streaks or condensation under the glass.
  • The device gets unusually warm, restarts on its own or no longer charges.

We advise against the well-known rice trick: rice hardly draws any moisture out of the inside of a device, but dust and starch particles can get into its openings. Also keep in mind that many manufacturer warranties exclude water damage – fast, professional action increases the chance of saving your phone.

How often do I need to play the sound?

As a rule of thumb: three times for about 10 seconds each, with short pauses in between. Keep the speaker opening facing down while you do it. If you still see droplets afterwards or playback sounds muffled, repeat the process after a few minutes. Several runs are completely normal and perfectly safe for the speaker.

Does this work on every phone?

The method works on practically every device with a built-in speaker and a modern browser – iPhones, Android phones, tablets and even Bluetooth speakers. The only requirement is that the speaker still produces sound at all. How well the water comes out depends on the design and condition of the individual speaker, so success cannot be guaranteed.

Can the tone damage my speaker?

No. 165 Hz sits right in the middle of the normal playback range of a phone speaker – comparable to a low note in a piece of music. Even at full volume, the strain is no greater than playing music loudly. Just avoid holding your ear directly against the speaker while the tone is playing.

What if the sound stays muffled?

If the sound remains muffled after several runs, moisture is probably still sitting behind the membrane or inside the housing. Let the device dry for a few hours at room temperature with the opening facing down, then try again. If nothing improves or further symptoms appear, a repair shop should open the device and check it for corrosion.
